Mechanical Properties of Solid Biomass as Affected by Moisture Content

The objective of the study was to examine influence moisture content on mechanical properties solid biomass, which is important for storage and handling. Mechanical involving powder flowability were determined with a Jenike shear tester. materials tested powdered biomass: sunflower husks, apple pomace, dried distillers grains solubles (DDGS), meat bone meal. In static operations in biomass generally under significant load, such as silos, deteriorates increases its cohesion. case DDGS, an additional slight decrease stress observed samples highest content, above 20%. For meal lubrication phenomenon clearly observed, increased manifested better flowability, requiring lower boundary stresses than less moist samples. pomace samples, normal 50 kPa, addition 10% did not change values stresses, indicating stability their properties. use higher contents, at 10%, should be avoided, material can lead overhangs tanks silos.
